How Long Does a Handyman Job Take? (Melbourne Job-by-Job Guide)

Most handyman jobs take one to two hours, and a skilled handyman can knock several of them over in a single visit. Bigger jobs run longer: a small plaster repair takes a couple of hours, painting a full room is generally a full day, and some jobs — like painting items or tiling — need a second visit so the paint or grout can properly cure. Here’s how long the most common jobs actually take, and what makes the difference.

General handyman jobs: 1–2 hours

For everyday jobs, most handyman work takes roughly one to two hours — replacing handles, installing hardware throughout the house, hanging fixtures, minor repairs and adjustments (you can see the full range of jobs a handyman can do in our recent guide). The smart move is to batch several of these into one visit rather than booking separate call-outs, which is exactly how a fixed-price handyman visit is designed to work.

The exception is anything that involves painting. Painting items like doors takes longer and sometimes needs a second visit, because the paint has to fully dry between coats — rushing that is how you end up with a poor finish.

Small plaster repairs: a couple of hours

A small plaster repair usually takes a couple of hours — and the reason we can turn it around same-day is that we use a plaster accelerator, a product that speeds up how fast the plaster and coats dry, so we’re not waiting hours between stages.

Done properly, here’s the full process behind a plaster repair:

  1. Supply and install plastic and canvas drop sheets to keep surrounding areas and walkways protected
  2. Remove the existing damaged plaster and dispose of it appropriately
  3. Prepare the area for the new plaster
  4. Supply and install new plaster to the damaged area
  5. Supply and install all required screws, glues and fixings
  6. Supply and install Base Coat 60, then skim in preparation for the second base coat
  7. Supply and install a second coat of Base Coat 60 and skim in preparation for the top coat
  8. Sand, fill and prepare any imperfections ready for the top coat
  9. Supply and install the Ultratop top coat
  10. Sand back the plaster and prepare it for painting
  11. Supply and install new colour-matched paint

That’s a lot of stages for “a couple of hours” — which is only possible with the right materials and an experienced hand.

Painting a room: a full day

Painting a full room is generally a full day per room — and that includes doing it properly: walls, doors, skirtings, architraves and sills, not just the flat wall space.

Why a full day? It comes down to experience, and how good (and how proud) your painter is. Cutting in, rolling and back-rolling all take time, and they’re a big part of why painting quotes vary so much in price — a quote that looks cheap often skips the prep and the careful work that makes a finish last. At 4P Collective we take the utmost pride in our work, and our painters are the best in the business — so the time goes into a result you’ll still be happy with years later.

Carpentry: depends on size and materials

Carpentry timing is the hardest to pin to a number, because it depends on the size of the job and the materials used. Replacing decking boards, hanging doors, installing skirting and architraves, and other carpentry work can range from an hour or two to a multi-day job depending on scope. The best way to know is a quick look or a description of the job — then we can give you an accurate timeframe up front.

Tiling: usually two visits

Even a small tiling job typically needs two separate visits, and there’s a good reason for it:

  • Visit 1 — installing the tiles and letting the adhesive set
  • Visit 2 — grouting the tiles, then finishing by caulking the areas that need it

You can’t rush between those stages without compromising the finish, so the time built in is what protects the quality. As with painting, the final result comes down to experience, skill and the pride taken in the work.

Why some jobs take two visits

It’s worth knowing up front: a second visit usually isn’t padding — it’s drying and curing time. Paint needs to dry between coats, plaster needs to set, and tile adhesive needs to cure before grouting. A good handyman builds that time in rather than rushing it, because rushing a coat or a cure is the fastest way to a finish that fails. Where we can speed it up safely — like the plaster accelerator — we do.

What affects how long a job takes

Three things move the timeline more than anything else: the size and complexity of the job, the materials involved (some need curing time, some don’t), and the skill of the person doing it. A skilled tradesperson who preps properly is often faster and delivers a better result — which is why the cheapest quote and the quickest quote aren’t always the bargain they look like.

One more thing worth knowing: the earlier you book, the smaller the job. If you’ve spotted any early signs your home needs attention, a quick fix now is faster and cheaper than the bigger repair it becomes later — and you can always book the whole list into a single visit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a typical handyman job take?

Most everyday handyman jobs take around one to two hours — things like replacing handles, installing hardware and minor repairs. A skilled handyman will often batch several small jobs into a single visit to save you money.

How long does it take to paint a room?

Generally a full day per room when it’s done properly, including the doors, skirtings, architraves and sills — not just the walls. Cutting in, rolling and back-rolling all take time, and that careful work is what makes the finish last.

How long does a small plaster repair take?

Usually a couple of hours. We use a plaster accelerator that speeds up the drying of the plaster and coats, which lets us complete most small repairs in a single same-day visit.

Why do some handyman jobs need a second visit?

Drying and curing time. Paint has to dry between coats, and tiling needs the adhesive to set before grouting and caulking. Building that time in protects the quality of the finish.

Why do painting quotes vary so much?

Mostly because of the prep and the technique. Cutting in, rolling and back-rolling properly takes time and skill, and a cheaper quote often skips it. For a fuller breakdown of pricing, see our guide to how much a handyman costs in Melbourne.
